SHECC Play Yard Renovation

For the past two months, the Men’s Club has been working with SHECC (preschool) staff to renovate the SHECC Play Yard. The work started with a $4,000 donation by the Men’s Club to the Temple with a restriction that the funds be used to upgrade the SHECC Play Yard.
On December 17, 2023, a work party was organized that included: Jack Friedman, Joel Zizmor, Aaron Lepold, Howard Taub, Sheldon Goldsmith, Preschool director, Mercedes Mendoza, Executive Director of the Temple, Shanda Witkin, Liz Delima, Irene Dibowitz, Ashorina Medina and Rich Pickard. Rich Zbriger also helped with this project but was unable to participate in the work party.
Fueled by bagels, pastry, coffee, and tea provided by the ECC, the group spent just under 3 hours on a day that threatened rain turning a somewhat dilapidated play yard into a very usable preschool play area.
Among the tasks accomplished, were putting up a new musical fence, building a bridge to go over a water trench, digging out the water trench, assembling a music balance board, building and placing a new balance beam, moving rocks, and unblocking a gate that did not work, moving rocks to enable a toy construction digger to work properly, drilling holes in new planter beds attached to a playhouse to allow those planter beds to drain properly, digging out an existing water trench, sweeping and sifting sand and placing the sifted sand into a sandbox, uncovering buried large rocks that toddlers climb on, cleaning out garden beds, and cleaning picnic tables.
A lot was accomplished in just under 3 hours! Sheldon Goldsmith and Jack Friedman did amazing work with their handyman skills and tools. There is a bit more work to do. Some finalizing the renovation of existing equipment, sealing, assembling, and installing some additional new equipment, placing a border and landing materials in certain areas, installing a new toy mud kitchen and a new water rack and slide. It is anticipated that this additional work will be completed by January 31, 2024.
All in the work party left with a feeling of accomplishment that their service had been worthwhile. Thanks to all who participated on December 17, 2023 and to those who have or otherwise will work on this very necessary project.
