KJ @ Shir Hadash

The fall Chugim (electives) opportunities for our Kulanu youth include Movement or Cooking for our younger grades Kinder through 3rd, and then Creative Writing or Music for our older grades 4th through 6th - after picking their chosen elective, they stick with it for three in-depth sessions. In January the Chugim (electives) will enter a new cycle, with different electives becoming available for the students to select and enjoy. Enjoy these photos from our recent Chugim (electives):

Cooking with Morah Rachel and Morah Nina - Last session, with Morah Rachel, we made homemade challah and learned about a Jewish man Mr. Fleischman who created the process for dried yeast. In the most recent cooking, with Morah Nina, we learned about chopping and slicing and prepared a special salad.

Connecting with Judaism through Music: In this chug, we spent our time learning some of our most common Jewish melodies and songs. We learned the words and meaning to the song, Gesher T’zar Me’od - (“The whole entire world is a very narrow bridge”).

Movement with Morah Korrine - we combined Hebrew learning with physical movement through a series of fun and active games. The first was “red light green light”, in which kids learned the Hebrew words for red and green. We also learned about male/female versions of words, such as moreh/morah and madrich/madricha.

Creative Writing with Moreh Scott - Why do we write? For a creative outlet, to process our feelings, to build connections with others, and just to have fun! In today’s class, the class went outside and together we focused on nature writing connected to holidays, such as Sukkot and Tu B’Shevat. Even when singing about the Torah, we talk about it being a “tree of life.” We wrote Haiku and focused on sensory detail.
