About Our Services
“What is service of the heart?
This is prayer.”
At Shir Hadash we have a variety of services, each with their own style. Our members love to sing, and our services include music reflecting a wide range of composers and musical styles appropriate to each service.
Babysitting is now available at selected services.
Friday Night Worship
No Shush Shabbat — The Kid Friendly Service
No Shush Shabbat services generally fall on the 1st Friday of the month. They begin at 6:30 pm. and are preceded by an affordable, family-friendly dinner at 5:45. This special worship opportunity is designed for elementary-school-aged children and their families. Filled with camp-style music and hand motions, led by song leader and guitarist Angela Gold, the No Shush Shabbat features a “hands-free siddur.” In addition to worship, this 45-minute-long service includes a story, birthday blessings, and quiz-show-style game. For the 2010-2011 school year, No-Shush Shabbat will be held on August 27, October 1, November 5, January 7, February 4, March 4, April 1, May 6, and June 1.
Celebrate Shabbat with a lively, interactive, musical service on the second Friday of the month. We introduce fresh music from both established and emerging Jewish composers each month. Guitar, bass, and drums add to the dynamic experience. This 8 pm service lasts about an hour and is often preceded by a catered dinner.
On the 3rd, 4th, and occasionally 5th Shabbat of the month, services are held at 8:00 pm. The service, geared for adults, may include a sermon delivered by Rabbi Aron or Rabbi Lobel, a participatory presentation, or visit by an outside speaker. The congregation’s volunteer choir typically joins us on the 3rd week of the month. On the last Friday of the month, the service includes a Torah reading and discussion of the weekly portion.

Saturday Morning Worship
Community Shabbat Services
Community Shabbat services take place on Saturday mornings throughout the year on which there is no Bar or Bat Mitzvah. Led by our clergy team, these services often feature a special theme or program in addition to the reading of the Torah. Watch for these services once or twice a month. Upcoming themes in 2010–2011 include Judaism and Animals, Learner’s Services, Arab-Jewish Twinning, Jewish Arts, and Tikkun Olam.
Tot Shabbat Services
Tot Shabbat services, designed for families with very young children, begin at 9:30 am, usually the second Saturday of the month. Led by our educator, Rabbi Levenberg, these brief services feature upbeat songs, a short story, and taking out the Torah scroll—along with cuddly stuffed Torahs. Tot Shabbat services meet in the multi-purpose room in the school building.
Shir Shabbat Services
Between Simchat Torah and Shavuot, Shir Shabbat services are held in the chapel as an alternative to the Bar or Bat Mitzah service in the sanctuary. Beginning at 10:30 am, Shir Shabbat services are predominately lay-led, with congregational volunteers leading the service as well as the Torah and Haftarah readings. For more information on this informal worship experience or to volunteer for a leadership role in an upcoming service please see our Shir Shabbat page.
