Community of Shir Hadash
“Behold how good and pleasant it is
for brothers and sisters to dwell together in unity!”
—Psalms 133:1
Congregation Shir Hadash members are involved in a wide variety
of activities which focus on learning, spiritual growth,
community service or building community. Many opportunities
exist for creativity and leadership; all of them strengthen our
community and offer a wonderful way to get to know others with
similar interests
Caring Committee
The Caring Committee serves our congregants by offering care and
support to those who are ill, in mourning, housebound or
returning home with a new baby. A cooking committee ensures there
is a supply of frozen, homemade meals for shut-ins and their
families. Our Caring Committee provides an extended family within
Shir Hadash by sending a message of involvement and concern from
member to member in good times and in difficult times. Shir
Hadash also provides a support group for unemployed/underemployed
workers, a support group for members dealing with loss, and a
weekly recovery meeting.
Choir
Joining one of our choirs is a great way to share your love of
music with others. Members age 13 and older are invited to
participate in the adult choir. Elementary school age students
can participate in the Makelah Children’s Choir.
College Outreach
Keeping in touch with our college age members is a priority at
Shir Hadash. Events are held over summer vacation or winter
break for these students. Addresses and Emails of college
students are collected from parents, so that letters and packages
can be sent periodically. Programs are also offered during the
year for parents of college age students.
Confirmation Mentors
Confirmation mentors meet for structured discussion and
one-on-one time with confirmation students five times a year,
providing a listening ear and supporting teens when it is most
needed.
Committees
Committees are the working arm of the Congregation, the means
through which members work together to carry out the goals and
ideals of Shir Hadash. Working with others in an area you feel
passionate about is a great way to make friends and to become
integrated into our community. We have a committee for every
interest!
Freilach Menschen
Freilach Menschen (Happy Folk) is for Shir Hadash members in
their senior years, care givers and anyone who is interested.
This group meets monthly at Shir Hadash. Lunch is provided for a
nominal fee and members are asked to bring a dessert to share. A
special program is offered at each meeting.
Havurah
A Havurah is meant to provide an extended family experience for
congregants, many of whom do not have family nearby. A Havurah is
a small group of Congregation members who meet regularly for
companionship and to explore Jewish and other interests. Some
havurot are neighborhood based, others are based on
children’s ages or similar interests such as theater.
Men’s Club
The major objective of the Men’s Club is to increase the
level of interactions among men of the congregation by providing
opportunities for contact through participation in service
projects that support the Congregation and social events that
educate and entertain our members.
Women of Reform Judaism (WRJ)
Join our local chapter of Women of Reform Judaism for monthly
events, providing social and educational opportunities. WRJ
manages the Shir Hadash gift shop and sponsors the fall new
member dinner. Fundraising programs, such as birthdaygrams,
support congregation needs, particularly scholarships for special
programs.
Sharing a Meal Together
Our members enjoy eating together. The first Friday of each
month, enjoy a purchased, catered dinner at 7:30 p.m., following
the 6:30 Kabbalat Shabbat service. Potluck meals are part of
many other celebrations at Shir Hadash including an end of summer
dinner at Blossom Hill Park and class dinners for the Religious
School families. Enjoying dessert at the Oneg following Friday
evening services provides additional opportunities to connect.
Youth Groups
Congregation Shir Hadash's four youth groups, Club 3/4, Club 5/6
JYG, and SHAGY offer opportunities for fun, camaraderie, and
informal learning to students in grades 3-12.
