We welcome adult members of the congregation who have not had a Bar or Bat Mitzvah ceremony and would like to become more proficient in leading Jewish prayer and learn to chant and explain the weekly Torah portion. This is a great way to bond with a small group of adults who are also interested in Jewish learning.

Course description:
In this class, led by Cantor Felder -Levy and Rabbi Aron, you will

  • learn how to chant the prayers of the Shabbat morning service
  • develop skills as a Torah reader.
  • gain a deep understanding of the prayers you are learning and will learn the traditional Torah cantillation, known as trope.
  • study with Rabbi Aron to gain an understanding of how Jews study Torah and explore the Midrash, the classical explication of the text, and Meforshim, medieval Jewish commentators, as well as more contemporary ways of understanding the Torah.

Pre-requisites: Students must have completed Prayer Book Hebrew class or equivalent.

Books, if known/available: Our texts will be Learning Torah by Joel Grishaver, How to Learn Torah Cantillation ( URJ Press) and Delving into Tefillah (URJ On-line publication). Other resources include: How To Read The Bible by Marc Zvi Brettler, and Stringing the Pearls by James S. Diamond.

The Adult B’nai Mitzvah Service will be held on June 4, 2011.

Fees: The class fee is $180. Later in the year, the class may impose chose an additional celebration fee.
